This is installing TrueCrypt in what's called portable mode. You can then simply go to that folder and run the “TrueCrypt.exe” located there. Instead of installing TrueCrypt as normal, this option allows you to extract all of the files to any folder you want. The second option is to install TrueCrypt in “Extract” mode. That would mean that for any other computer to access the encrypted data on this USB drive, you would also need to install TrueCrypt on that computer. If you install TrueCrypt using the “Install” option, it will install to your program files folder just like any other application. On the “Wizard Mode” screen, you have two ways to install TrueCrypt. Read the license agreement, click to select “I accept the license terms”, and then click the “Next” button. The “TrueCrypt Setup.” window will open on the “License Terms” screen. ![]() This will download the file and then automatically start the installer. On the download information bar, click the “Run” button. This system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition, so I'll click the download button under Windows. There are three different download links for the Windows, Mac, and the Linux versions. It shows the latest stable version number after this, which in this case is “7.1a”. Now let’s look under the section labeled “Latest Stable Version”. On the TrueCrypt homepage, click the “Downloads” link. There will also be a link placed in the description. In the address bar, enter “TRUECRYPT.ORG”, and then press enter. ![]() Open a web browser like “Internet Explorer”. TrueCrypt supports Windows from Windows 2000 through Windows 7, and supports Mac from OS X 10.4 on to the current version. Future tutorials will cover some of the more advanced features like encrypting your entire hard drive. This will allow you to take encrypted files on your USB drive from one computer to another. TrueCrypt supports tons of advanced features, but we are only going to be creating an encrypted volume on a portable USB drive. What is TrueCrypt? TrueCrypt is able to create a virtual encrypted disk within a file and then mount it as a real drive on your computer.
